GATE Score Calculation: Everything You Need to Know

The GATE exam is conducted in multiple sessions, and the difficulty level varies across sessions and branches. To ensure fairness, the conducting authority uses a normalization process to calculate GATE scores. This process considers the relative performance of all candidates and converts raw marks (out of 100) into normalized scores (out of 1000).

How to Calculate GATE Marks Using the Answer Key

Before the official results are announced, you can calculate your GATE marks using the answer key and response sheet. Here’s how:

    Marking Scheme

    • Each question carries 1 or 2 marks.
    • For MCQs, there is negative marking:
      • 1/3 mark deducted for every incorrect 1-mark question.
      • 2/3 mark deducted for every incorrect 2-mark question.
    • For MSQs (Multiple Select Questions) and NATs (Numerical Answer Type), there is no negative marking.

    Formula to Calculate GATE Marks

    MCQs:

    [(1 x Correct 1-mark MCQs) - (1/3 x Incorrect 1-mark MCQs)] + [(2 x Correct 2-mark MCQs) - (2/3 x Incorrect 2-mark MCQs)]

    MSQs and NATs:

Total marks = Marks from MSQs + Marks from NATs

    GATE Score Normalization Process

For papers conducted in multiple sessions (e.g., CE, ME), the normalization process ensures fairness by adjusting scores based on session difficulty. Here’s how it works:

    Normalization Formula

    GATE Score = ((M – Mq) / (Mt – Mq)) x (St – Sq) + Sq

    Where:

    • M: Marks obtained (actual marks for single-session papers or normalized marks for multi-session papers).
    • Mq: Qualifying marks for a general category candidate.
    • Mt: Mean marks of the top candidates (as defined above).
    • Sq: Score assigned to the qualifying mark (fixed at 350).
    • St: Score assigned to the top marks (fixed at 900).

    GATE Qualifying Marks

Category Qualifying Marks (Out of 100)
    General 25 or μ + σ, whichever is higher
OBC 90% of General category marks
SC/ST/PwD 66.67% of General category marks

GATE Rank vs Marks vs Scores: Expected Analysis

Here’s a detailed analysis of GATE Rank vs Marks vs Scores based on previous years’ trends:

GATE Rank Marks (CSE) Marks (ME) Marks (EC) Marks (EE) Marks (CE)
    1-10 80+ 92+ 73+ 91+ 90+
    10-50 75-80 87-92 67-73 87-91 85-90
    50-100 72-75 85-87 63-67 84-87 78-85
    100-200 68-72 82-85 60-63 81-84 74-78

    GATE Calculator FAQs

How accurate is the GATE score calculator?

Our calculator achieves 95% accuracy through continuous updates of exam patterns and cutoff trends.

    Which colleges accept GATE scores?

All IITs, NITs, and 500+ engineering institutes consider GATE scores for MTech admissions.

How is the GATE score calculated?

The GATE score is calculated using a normalization formula that considers the difficulty level of the paper, the candidate's raw score, and the average performance of all candidates.

What is the difference between GATE score and GATE rank?

The GATE score is a normalized score out of 1000, while the GATE rank is the position of the candidate among all test-takers. The rank is determined based on the GATE score.

How often is the calculator updated?

We update our calculator annually to reflect the latest exam patterns, cutoff trends, and normalization formulas.

What factors affect my GATE percentile?

Your GATE percentile is influenced by your raw score, the difficulty level of the exam, and the performance of other candidates in your subject.

Can I predict my admission chances in IITs/NITs using this tool?

Yes, our tool provides personalized reports on your admission chances in IITs, NITs, and other top engineering colleges based on previous year cutoffs.

What should I do if my predicted rank is not as expected?

If your predicted rank is not as expected, consider analyzing your preparation strategy, focusing on weak areas, and practicing more mock tests to improve your performance.
