This process considers the relative performance of all candidates and converts raw marks (out of 100) into normalized scores (out of 1000).
How to Calculate GATE Marks Using the Answer Key
Before the official results are announced, you can calculate your GATE marks using the answer key and response sheet. Here’s how:
Marking Scheme
- Each question carries 1 or 2 marks.
- For MCQs, there is negative marking:
- 1/3 mark deducted for every incorrect 1-mark question.
- 2/3 mark deducted for every incorrect 2-mark question.
- For MSQs (Multiple Select Questions) and NATs (Numerical Answer Type), there is no negative marking.
Formula to Calculate GATE Marks
MCQs:
[(1 x Correct 1-mark MCQs) - (1/3 x Incorrect 1-mark MCQs)] + [(2 x Correct 2-mark MCQs) - (2/3 x Incorrect 2-mark MCQs)]
MSQs and NATs:
Total marks = Marks from MSQs + Marks from NATs

GATE Score = ((M – Mq) / (Mt – Mq)) x (St – Sq) + Sq

- M: Marks obtained (actual marks for single-session papers or normalized marks for multi-session papers).
- Mq: Qualifying marks for a general category candidate.
- Mt: Mean marks of the top candidates (as defined above).
- Sq: Score assigned to the qualifying mark (fixed at 350).
- St: Score assigned to the top marks (fixed at 900).
